Divination in Space
Divination is a way of using the world around you to tell the future or just get an idea of what to do. Whether that be Tarot, constellations or even throwing bones. The methods go on and on with each culture having different methods of doing it. Even in space not all methods necessarily change. For example, Tarot would be the same, sure the questions are different but the fundamental meanings behind the cards would not necessarily change. Neither would the method of pulling or RNG on a computer X number of cards and interpreting them.
Now the much more interesting topic is those methods that would change. First is throwing bones. With throwing bones, you lightly toss a set number of bones onto a surface and then read them. Depending on how the bones arrange themselves it will give you an answer. Now in zero gravity or microgravity environments the surface that you would throw the bones in would have to be enclosed. Otherwise, the bones would scatter every which way resulting in a useless reading. The shape of the enclosure would be up to the practitioner, but the enclosure would have a closable opening, once the bones have been cast the enclosure would be closed allowing the bones to arrange themselves, finally they would be read giving the answer needed.
The next method that would be different would be pyromancy. On spaceships and stations, it would be either not allowed due to the fire risk or if allowed, it must be done in specific places. These pyromancy spots would be especially nonflammable and have extra fire suppression systems installed.
The final method that would change would be Astrology. Astrology is based on constellations, planets, moons, and other bodies in reference to Earth. On a different planet all the astrological markers would be different. Constellations would change, some planets may have more or less than 1 moon. A system might even have more than 1 sun. A given culture or group on the set planet or station would create their own astrological charts and symbols in reference to what can be seen from their given planet.
Overall divination will still be around in the future. It has been around since the ancient times and is still around today. There are also way more methods of divination then what was described in this post with many of them also being affected by an ever changing future.
How to Apply
In other media methods and TTRPGs this would mainly be used for flavor or descriptions. Something to break up the monotony. But, an interesting way of using these ideas is to have the GM or PCs use the given tarot method in real life to augment the experience. If the PC is using tarot cards in game have the players actually pull some and interpret the cards. Overall these should be a fun way to enhance a game and not a chore.
