Godzilla 1973 an Apocalyptic Kaiju Setting

Introduction

The Cold War continues even after Godzilla first attacked Japan in 1954, the Oxygen Destroyer has never been able to be replicated since it was used. Kaiju attacks continue and conventional and nuclear munitions are of limited ability to kill them. Florida is a radioactive wasteland after the US killed Kamakuras with a combined total of 40 warheads.  The Komchatka peninsula is partially underwater after the Soviets tried to take out Godzilla in ’67. Everywhere Kaiju’s attack radiation levels rise poisoning nearby land.

The doomsday clock is 1 second to midnight, with proxy wars continuing in South America and Africa. Coastal zones have been abandoned or heavily fortified for the inevitable Kaiju attack. Geopolitical tensions continue to rise with blame being thrown around whenever a vessel disappears. Terror attacks by religious radicals who consider Kaiju’s a form of divine intervention are reaching a fever pitch. And you, you are a pawn in the game of Proxy Wars, Kaiju Attacks and The Cold War.

AGENCIES

CIA: Formed from the OSS, the CIA fights the ‘Monsters’ in the dark. Clandestine operations, experiments, and black sites form a backbone of the agency.

KGB: The Committee for State Security, designed for fighting threats both foreign and domestic. Training both foreign and domestic groups to help the Union as well as handling ‘problems’ silently. The KGB still exists for the good of the Union.

THE WORLD

·       The US has centralized, starting to retreat from the coastlines from the inevitable Kaiju incursions. Ports are heavily armed and armored to attempt repelling attacks. Florida is a wasteland and Hawaii is a mess. Canada and Mexico have similairly followed the US protocol of defense. A Pan American Anti Kaiju force exists but division and infighting is rampant

·         The USSR has thrown people and materials to help create massive coastal defenses. The Sea of Okhotsk remains the most heavily defended area.

·         China with the support of the USSR has attempted to create massive coastal defenses.

·         Australia and New Zealand were fully razed in 1957 during the 6-month Kaiju war

·         Other East Asian islands have faced continued attacks and heavy damage

·          Africa and South America are proxy war central between the Western and Eastern bloc

HOW TO PLAY

Investigating weird Kaiju cults, stopping terror attacks and even interfering with the opposite power are all valid options. Godzilla 1973, as a setting fundamentally lies as a spy game. You and your small team are trying to stop whatever current threat there is. Some objectives are just too big for an individual team though. A four person CIA or KGB squad can’t effectively deal with a Kaiju attack after all

THE WEIRD (optional)

Psychics: The ability for the mind to interact with the physical world, whether that be telekinesis, telepathy, clairvoyance or even teleportation. All are being used by various government and non-governmental entities

UFOs and Aliens: Aliens have been visiting and interacting with Earth ever since the first nuclear explosion. Anti Alien units have been formed but with limited success. Some have theorized that Kaiju’s like Gaigan are actually extraterrestrials designed to kill Godzilla and make it easier for earth to be taken over.
